Trees. Leaves simple, sessile, subsessile or petiolate, spiral, crowded at the end of blanches. Cataphylls variable in shape and size. Inflorescences pendulous or erect, raceme, spike or corymb-like raceme, terminal, cauliflorous or ramiflorous, sparsely or densely flowered; rachis variable in size, glabrous or pubescent; bracts and bracteoles variable in shape and size. Flowers pedicellate or sessile; hypanthium funnel-shaped or tubular, tetragonous, 4-winged, rounded or grooved, glabrous or pubescent; sepals unlobed or 2–4, closed or open in bud; petals 4; stamens numerous in 3–12 whorls, the inner whorl of staminodia, connate at the base; anthers basifixed, longitudinally dehiscent; disc annular; ovary inferior, 2–4-locular, ovules 1–6 per locule; style filiform; stigma capitate or rounded. Fruits drupe, tetragonous, 4-wings, rounded or grooved, crowned by the persistent calyx, pedicellate or sessile.
